Sharp full-color pictures, colorful presentation, well organized, and informative. I'm glad I bought this book, (my first) on Lionel trains. Lysias
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (February, 2000)
Author: S. C. Todd
Average review score:

Truly Magnificent
This is truly a masterly piece of work. At last the speeches of Lysias have been given the attention they have been long over due. The author has successfully produced a modern translation of the extant works of this great Greek logographer. Lucid and insightful this work is easily accessible for those with a general interest in Ancient History, as well as both A-Level Ancient Historians and undergraduate level students who possess no or limited knowledge of the ancient Greek language.

The author's most notable achievement is that of the quality of the translation. Textual emendations and inferred passages are clearly provided, as are the alternate readings and meanings of the Greek text. However, the erudition of both author and book are clearly evident. Each speech is preceded by a detailed introduction outlining important events referred to within the text as well as political ties and historical events that often form the background to the case in question. This often-invaluable introduction is used to highlight effectively the subtleties of the cases but it can be undisputed to state that the true appeal of the book is in its majestic grasp of language. The obvious skill of the author lies in his ability to capture the true atmosphere of the speeches whilst at the same time providing a clear and lucid translation.

Whether you possess a general interest in the ancient world or are a student in Classics or Ancient History is irrelevant - academic works simply do not come any better than this! A must for all bookcases!

Manifesting Your Heart's Desire Book I (Revised and Expanded)
Published in Paperback by Heart Light (2002)
Authors: Fred Fengler and Todd Varnum
Average review score:

Still the perfect thing at the perfect time...
I first read Manifesting Your Heart's Desire several years ago and felt I had discovered the key to everything I wanted my life to be. In reading the revised and expanded edition I feel no differently about this, I still feel it's the key to everything I have the potential and desire to bring about in my life. I realize now, however, that this is not a one-time, quickie trick, but an ongoing process of evaluating and re-evaluating the results I'm getting. This book is a tool and a means of interpreting what it is I need to do differently. Consider this a workbook as well as a key to personal power while bearing in mind, keys are useless until we actually use them to open doors!

McX: A Romance of the Dour
Published in Hardcover by Grove Press (October, 1990)
Author: Todd McEwen
Average review score:

Warning: Please have humor before reading
Again and again the voice of Todd McEwen excels at making the slight seem grand, the simple seem quiet comlicated, and the desire for Guiness unrivaled. If you like complete sentences and get aggravated. When. People don't write like you. Were taught. Stay away. If you like eloquence and humor beneath the guise of seriousness dive in. If you recognize yourself it may hurt, beware. This is not a book for the stout lads who run with the beautiful women and drink frilly drinks while worrying how to get laid. This is a wonderful twisted look at a loner. Satire, not sarcasm. McX belong's with the company of Beckett's Murphy.

Memoirs of a Highland Lady (Volumes 1 and 2 in One Book)
Published in Paperback by Canongate Pub Ltd (March, 1995)
Authors: Elizabeth Grant, Elizabeth Grant of Rothiemurchus, Andrew Tod, and Andrew Todd
Average review score:

A personal look into the past
Elizabeth Grant of Rothiemurchus' biographical volumes offer a very personal look into the past of Scotland (in the first book). Her account of her family's lives and what Scotland was like in the early 19th century would be fascinating to anyone interested in that country or interested in the lives of women of that era. In some ways she seems very contemporary and in other ways she seems very far removed from life today. But her memoirs offer a unique view of how life was lived that long ago and in a place so remote from the mainstream. I found the first book totally enthralling and look forward to reading the other volumes of her later life, after she married an Anglo-Irish landowner and moved to Ireland, and her later travels.

Mendelssohn: The Hebrides and Other Overtures
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (October, 2002)
Author: R. Larry Todd
Average review score:

What's behind your sensation
The book is easy to follow, even for a reader like me, that is, one with little or no background in formal musical education. (I knew nothing about the sonata form, except for the name itself. But now, while listening to the Midsummer Night's Dream Overture, I can tell when the exposition part ends and the development part starts and so on.) The author meticulously demonstrates how Mendelssohn tried and succeeded in synthesizing form and content, that is, the traditional sonata form and extra-musical contents such as landscape, poetry and drama to which the composer strove to give musical expressions. I'd like to recommend this book to anybody who wants to know what's behind his or her sensation.
